What You Need to Know Before You Start Driving Lessons in the Falkland Islands

1. Eligibility Requirements

 

To begin driving lessons in the Falkland Islands, you must meet certain eligibility criteria:

Minimum Age

You must be at least 17 years old to apply for a provisional driving licence in the Falkland Islands. You can start taking driving lessons at this age.

Provisional Driving Licence

To start learning to drive, you must hold a Provisional Licence. This allows you to drive under the supervision of a qualified driving instructor.

If you do not have a provisional licence, you can apply for one through the Falkland Islands Post Office. .

Vision Requirements

You must have a standard level of vision to drive, which includes being able to read a number plate from a distance of 20 metres.

If you wear glasses or contact lenses to meet the vision requirement, you must ensure you wear them during your lessons and driving test.


2. Before You Start Your Driving Lessons

 

Documentation to Bring

Provisional Licence: You must bring your valid provisional driving licence to your first lesson.

Proof of Identity: If you are applying for your provisional licence or need to verify your identity, make sure to have an official form of ID, such as a passport or birth certificate.

Medical Information (if applicable): If you have any medical conditions or take medications that may affect your driving ability, it is important to inform your instructor ahead of time. This ensures that your lessons are conducted safely.

Health Considerations

General Health: Driving requires full physical and mental concentration. If you are feeling unwell, it’s a good idea to postpone your lesson. This includes conditions like severe fatigue, dizziness, or any other illness that could impair your driving abilities.

Medication: Some medications may affect your ability to drive safely. If you are on medication, discuss it with your instructor before starting lessons, and consult with your doctor if necessary.

Appropriate Clothing

Comfortable Footwear: Wear flat, comfortable shoes that allow for easy operation of the pedals. Avoid high heels, sandals, or shoes with a slippery sole.

Appropriate Attire: While driving, you should wear clothing that allows for easy movement and doesn’t obstruct your ability to control the vehicle.


3. What to Expect During Your Lessons

Lesson Structure

Introduction: During your first lesson, we will review the basics of the vehicle, its controls, and go over any relevant road safety rules in the Falkland Islands.

Practical Skills: You will gradually build your driving skills through a series of lessons. This includes learning how to:

Operate the car’s controls

Perform maneuvers such as parking, reversing, and turning, steering controls, hill starts, etc

Drive in various traffic conditions, and weather conditions.

Master safe driving practices such as checking mirrors and using turn signals.

Lesson Duration and Frequency

Standard Lessons: Most lessons last for about an hour. You can discuss the duration with your instructor, depending on your comfort and progress.

Regular Lessons: We recommend scheduling lessons regularly to maintain momentum and improve your skills quickly.

In-Car Training

During each lesson, you will practice driving under the guidance of your instructor. 

You will also learn the local road signs, speed limits, and rules specific to driving in the Falkland Islands.


4. The Road Test and Full Licence

Once you have gained enough confidence and proficiency behind the wheel, you will need to pass the Driving Test to receive your full driving licence. Here’s what you need to know:

Driving Test Requirements

Pass Your Theory Test: Before taking your driving test, you must pass the provisional test, which includes both a theory test (covering road signs, laws, and general driving knowledge).

Booking the Test: Theory and Practical tests are  booked through the Falkland Islands College. Your driving instructor can help guide you through the process.

The Practical Test

The test will evaluate your ability to safely and confidently operate a vehicle, including:

Vehicle controls and maneuvering

Understanding of local traffic laws

Safe decision-making while driving

The test typically takes around 60 minutes and is conducted in the same area where you have been practicing.

Post-Test and Full Licence

If you pass the practical driving test, you will be issued a competency certificate which you will need to take to the post office so that you can be issued your licence.


5. Local Driving Considerations in the Falkland Islands

Driving in the Falkland Islands presents unique conditions that are different from other places. Here are some key things to keep in mind:

Road Conditions

Camp and Isolated Areas: The Falkland Islands has a mix of paved and unpaved roads. Many areas are sparsely populated, and it’s important to be prepared for long stretches of road without many vehicles.

Weather Conditions: Weather can be unpredictable, with high winds and occasional rain. Learn how to handle adverse conditions safely during your lessons.

Junctions and Narrow Roads

There are a number of closed junctions in Stanley and other parts of the islands. It’s important to understand how to navigate these, as well as how to deal with narrower roads where vehicles may need to pass each other carefully.

Speed Limits

Be aware of the local speed limits, which are generally lower than those in larger cities. Speed limits are strictly enforced.

Wildlife and Livestock

There may be wildlife or livestock (such as sheep) on the roads, especially in camp areas and MPA road. Always stay alert for animals that may wander onto the road unexpectedly.

Test Fees: In addition to the lesson fees, there are also fees associated with the driving test, which are payable to the Falkland Islands Government through the College.
